Retail version available? November 25th, 2007| 02:13. ![]() ![]() Hi, I installed Visual Studio Community Edition with Update 4, and have been using it successfully for a month. Today when I try to run Visual Studio I get a license expired warning, and I can't renew my license. The warning is 'Your license has gone stale and must be updated' I've had a look around the forums and tried the following - logout and login again to my account - check for updated license - remove and reinstall None of these worked for me. How can I extend my Community Edition license? This is quite pressing for me as all my development activity is now blocked. Visual Studio Community Edition license is meant to be free and not to expire. Despite of that, any user suddenly experiences the same trouble as yours, LAHOLMES. The root cause is: Microsoft failed to clearly inform you that your license requires sign-in. What you need to do? Three simple steps: • create (or to revive) a Microsoft account, which is free, and • log in to it in your Visual Studio with that account, and • based on that account, create your Visual Studio account (can be the same as Microsoft, but usually asks for a few extra fields of user profile data), also free. The first step is done online, the third one inside the Visual Studio startup dialog. Once you are done with these three steps, you just log in to your Visual Studio Community Edition for each use, and it is yours without any time limitations. There is a checkbox inside the Visual Studio startup dialog, allowing you to keep you logged in. I have a VS account. I can log in to it. I see my repository on the web. On initial VS screen I do get a 'we can no longer retrieve user information error' on the lefthand side of dialog. I can log in to my account fine. I get the 'Evaluation period has ended' on the righthand side and when I enter my info it tells me that there is no license that can be updated.
